Design Talk with Yael Anders

The Design Guide not only takes you to inspiring places, but also portrays exciting designers who are shaping the vibe of the local design scene — like Yael Anders.

1. Challenge: What are you currently thinking about?

About my Master’s thesis at the ZHdK, which I’m starting in January.

2. Passion: What do you love about your job?

The freedom of design.

3. Wish cooperation: Who would you like to realise a project with?

With Calida, because the products are simply great, on many different levels, and have somehow been with me my whole life.

4. Newcomer: Who from the national and international design scene do you currently follow?

Fatima Fransson, because her artistic techniques are very fascinating.

5. Dinner round: Who from the Swiss and international design scene would ideally sit at the table with you?

Sabine Marcellis, Simone Bodmer-Turner, Eleni Petaloti, Anny Wang, Wanna Coo, Kim Pham and Nadja Stäubli, because I would feel comfortable in this group and we would develop exciting ideas!

6. Hotspot: Which restaurant have you recently discovered in Zurich?

The Stereo Bar on Brauerstrasse has just reopened.

7. Staycation: Which Swiss city or region inspires you?

Clearly Geneva, where I have already had the opportunity to realise several really exciting projects — for example with the feminist festival Les Créatives. I find the creative scene in Geneva extremely exciting.

8. Design Object: Do you have a favourite piece at home and why are you attached to it?

The Le Corbusier couch designed by Charlotte Perriand. I inherited it.

9. Gift: Where do you find the coolest gifts and what would you like to give yourself?

I always find something in second-hand shops or at Collab Zurich on Langstrasse or Pfingstweidstrasse. I would give myself a Thut scissor bed as a present. I’m even doing that this year.

10. Time travel: What do you think you’ll be doing in five years?

Increasingly with my own design practice: there are still so many materials and themes I would like to experiment with.
