1946, 1947, 1948. Die vergessenen Jahre der schönsten Schweizer Bücher
In the years 1946, 1947 and 1948 the famous competition “Die schönsten Schweizer Bücher” [The Most Beautiful Swiss Books] failed to take place. This book covers the “forgotten years” of the competition. In addition, it documents a travelling exhibition on this theme and a series of events linked to the exhibition. The research on book design and the making of books presented here is an innovative approach, and closes a gap in Swiss design history. In view of the fact that the exhibition project and the accompanying event formats had an influence on the publication, the history and topicality of book production is described from a contemporary point of view.
Comments of the nominators
A book about books, which succeeds in a formally and conceptually convincing way in paying tribute to the “forgotten books” of a well-known competition. A valuable contribution to research and to the preservation of the Swiss design heritage, it also constitutes a successful attempt to stimulate a wide debate about the history and tradition of Swiss book design.
