SWISS Bento
The Swiss Bento Box is a reusable snack box made of plastic. It was commissioned by the airline company Swiss to reduce the waste that occurs during daily flight operations from single-use packaging and to lower the resulting environmental pollution caused by air traffic. The box can undergo approximately 100 usage cycles before it needs to be replaced. Specially designed for use on medium-haul flights, on which only cold meals are offered, the shape of the Bento Box was inspired by traditional Japanese lunch boxes. Its understated appearance also exudes a certain value perception at the same time. The box is divided into three internal sections offering space for the main course, desert, as well as butter and cheese. The lid has a cavity, in which there is room for cutlery and a napkin. The dimensions came about from the requirement that 12 boxes needed to be able to be stored in the standard drawers, which are used at Swiss.
Comments of the nominators
An impressively clear and functional design, which successfully complies with the high level complex requirements of the airline industry regarding safety and handling. It satisfies its main purpose of avoiding unnecessary packaging waste at an exemplary level. The understated shape that appears self-evident approximates to that of its model, namely the Japanese lunch-box, with its convenient modesty but at the same time also looks very Swiss.
