Hamam Trafo Baden

A listed transformer building on the former BBC premises in Baden has been used as a setting for the creation of an oriental hamam, based on designs by interior architect Ushi Tamborriello and covering an area of 800 square metres. The design focuses on two thematic areas: first the interplay of veiling and unveiling, of quite open and quite intimate spatial structures; and then the integration of this mode of use with an industrial building that has been around for a long time. The result has been the creation of spaces aura. Without any denial of their historical origins, these serve to celebrate a bathing ritual that is designed to cleanse the body and the soul.
Comments of the nominators
A work that shows in an exemplary way how the traditions of the oriental bath can be harmonised with modern conceptions (not forgetting hygienic considerations). The restraint with which a forced «orientalisation» has been avoided means that the industrial origins of the building remain clearly visible.
