Kids’ Stuff Ess-Set für Kinder

Kids’ Stuff is a place setting for small children, consisting of 10 items in all. Both in its design and in the well considered choice of materials, it expresses the aspiration to take children seriously. The aim here is to do justice to children’s nature and needs, not just on the basis of childish decorations but through the development of functional solutions that take into account the special requirements of young children and the muscular coordination they are capable of. Poetic details, such as the form of a wooden platter’s being suggestive of a whale, serve to stimulate the child’s faculties of observation and imagination.
Comments of the nominators
An aesthetic place setting for children. Appealing design that nonetheless avoids falling into the trap of «prettification».
Comments of the jury
In this children’s place setting, «Kids’ Stuff», Alfredo Häberli has managed to achieve a solution for a classic design task that convinces all the way along the line. The unpretentious and timeless design is consistently accommodated to the needs and fine motor skills of small children. It impresses both in view of the variety of the carefully chosen materials and on the basis of the functionally differentiated formal idiom. The designer’s avoidance of the hackneyed figurative applications that are so often seen as indispensable is refreshing. Instead Mr Häberli has relied on playful design elements which speak to the child’s imagination and give the objects an attractive appeal. The qualities of this design conception, which can be described as human in the best sense of the word, show the integrity and the ability of a first-class designer personality.
