Uniform for Swiss Pavillon, World Expo Japan 2005 Bekleidungskonzept

Development of a uniform for the exhibition staff of the Swiss Pavilion at the World Expo 2005 in Aichi, Japan, hovers in an ambiguous area between aesthetics and functionality, or between fashion and working dress. The uniform consists of an eclectic assembly of elements, which taken together present a many-faceted image of Switzerland and are likely to register a lasting impression on the mind. Features worthy of note in this connection are the specially developed cloth prints, created through the recycling of old silk screens from the archives of the Swiss textile industry, and a complex treatment of colour which draws on the tones of the Alpine landscape.
Comments of the nominators
The cheerfulness and economy of the uniform is essentially based on the impressive way in which the fabrics have been developed. A fruitful and exemplary collaboration between textile and fashion design.
Comments of the jury
The Swiss Textile Design Award is conferred for textile creations. So in the context of the project «Uniform for Swiss Pavilion, World Expo Japan 2005» the prize goes to the materials which lend this collection its special and unmistakable character. A convincing impression is made not just by the techniques that have been used but also with reference to the collage of selected motifs. The idea of using ancient silk screen prints from the archives of the Swiss textiles industry is excitingly original and has a high degree of aesthetic appeal.
