Nominee | Interior Design | 2009
RhB UNESCO

Effected at the beginning of the 20th century, the Rhätische Bahn stretch of railway between Albula and Bernina is a pioneering work of modern engineering and architectural design. In the summer of 2008 it was included in the list of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. On this occasion a temporary exhibition was created on the history and future of the railway. This was presented simultaneously at the main workshop in Samedan and at “theme towers” at seven different locations along the line. Broad red bands were used as a linking element. These served both to mark out the exhibition area in each case, and to send out a widely visible signal into the surrounding country.
Comments of the nominators
A versatile design concept overall, which introduces the general public to the thematic content in a convincing manner. The strength of the project lies in the linkage of content and event, information and experience, and in the involvement of all the significant stations.
