«Gerontologisches Design für mehr Lebensqualität im Alter»
Functional and aesthetically pleasing signage is always and everywhere useful. This is particularly true for care institutions, where people with a wide range of disabilities move around. Here, age- and dementia-friendly signalling is a decisive factor for spatial orientation and people’s emotional well-being. It also supports the autonomy and mobility of patients. The Komform office has been dealing with the topic of barrier-free and at the same time aesthetic communication for many years. Systematically and with high standards, it explores novel design solutions in various fields. Komform developed a multi-pronged strategy for the development of age- and dementia-friendly signalling. Specially developed “old-age glasses” that simulate the manifold limitations of vision in old age, help to determine the right font sizes, colours, and contrasts. A multisensory approach makes it possible to address multiple channels of perception. Accordingly, in addition to lettering and colour, images, objects and even smells are integrated into the orientation system. Special attention is paid to image signalling. It builds on the findings of the “Imagery Theory” that states that images are more memorable than texts. This applies all the more if these images are integrated into the user’s world of experience and positive emotions are associated with them.
Comments of the nominators
Signalling and stigma-free aesthetics are issues that are neglected in many care facilities. Yet good spatial orientation is an important factor of well-being, especially for frail people or those suffering from dementia. The dedicated team at the Komform design agency has succeeded – not least thanks to a great sensitivity to the needs of older people – in implementing several exemplary signalling projects that are convincing in terms of function and design.
