SAFEEL Protektoren – Sicher durch den Alltag
The problem is all too familiar: in old age, when the muscles have deteriorated and the bones are weakened, even minor falls can have fatal consequences. A fracture of the neck of the femur, for example, often leads to permanent immobility and often enough to premature death. Modern protectors can effectively reduce the risk of injury in the event of a fall. But why are they rarely used? How could this be changed? Stefanie Keller and Samira Werner dealt with these questions as part of their diploma project at the ZHdK, Zurich University of the Arts. They found out that many people reject the protectors that have been available up to now for aesthetic reasons on the one hand and for very practical reasons on the other. The protectors make it difficult to go to the toilet, for example, and often they cannot be put on at all without outside help. The new Safeel protectors prototypically developed by Keller and Werner promise a remedy: they are easy to put on, offer a high degree of wearing comfort. The finely formulated aesthetics and texture do not stigmatise and allow the protectors to be worn visibly but also discreetly underneath the clothing.
Comments of the nominators
An interesting and promising diploma project that addresses a real problem. Safeel protectors offer elderly people a high degree of safety without compromising their quality of life. It is to be hoped that this idea will find a strong industrial partner who will turn the designs into a product.
