Space Duality
Virtual Reality (VR) has become an important field of work within the creative industries in recent years. However, most of the spaces designed with digital means are often little more than mere replicas of real existing spaces. This is gradually beginning to change. More and more often, virtual spaces are being created that stand out from the reality we are used to. For interior designers, this opens up the opportunity to invent and implement completely new types of spaces. The VR project “Space Duality”, which was developed at the Interior Design Department of HEAD Genève, is to be seen in this context. Space Duality aims to offer users a previously unknown spatial experience that is immersive and involves them emotionally. To present a total of seven different VR worlds, a real space installation consisting of seven furniture-like objects was created. Visitors move into or onto these objects to immerse themselves in the VR worlds. In doing so, they each adopt a posture that is intended to deepen and intensify the virtual experience.
Comments of the nominators
An interesting cross-disciplinary student project on VR and immersion. It explores in a new and original way the interplay between the physical world in which one is actually located when immersed in VR and the virtual world in whose spaces one moves.
