Öhi
The Stabelle, a traditional board chair widespread in the Alpine region, has already inspired several designers to new interpretations in the recent past due to its simplicity, its handcrafted character, and its down-to-earth impression. With the wooden chair “Öhi”, the young Bernese designer Marc Gerber now presents his version of this type of chair. Öhi differs from its model in that the seat and backrest are divided into two parts. Both consist of two solid wood boards that are slightly angled towards each other – a measure that on the one hand significantly changes the appearance of the chair and on the other hand is intended to improve seating comfort. Another difference stands out: traditionally, the backrest of a Stabelle is inserted into the board that serves as the seat. With Öhi it is the other way round. The seat is inserted into the backrest, in which the rear chair legs are also anchored. This strengthens the formal independence of the design for which Gerber strives to start serial production soon.
Comments of the nominators
A technically and conceptually clean work. Öhi succeeds in adding a new, interesting facet to the oft-treated subject of table chairs. In addition to the fresh, contemporary look, the increase in seating comfort is particularly noteworthy.
