DualCircuit Shirt
OceanSafe develops circular textile materials as an alternative to conventional polyester. Conventional polyester in textiles is highly problematic for the environment as persistent microplastics are released into the oceans during use and if not disposed of properly. The Swiss technology company, which works with various textile brands, has now designed its own fully recyclable garment, the «Dual Circuit T-Shirt», which is used by the Swiss Federal Civil Service. At the end of the garments' lifecycle, they are taken back and recycled: they can either be industrially composted or processed back into the basic components of the fibers and made into new t-shirts.
Comments of the jury
With its recyclable synthetic fibre, the company shows the potential to at least set an impulse for change in the largely environmentally harmful, powerful fashion industry. With the highest level of certification, the team of initiator Manuel Schweizer comprehensively thinks through materials, processes and products, and in this way searches for feasible scenarios of a recyclable clothing industry. In Swiss civilian service, the company has found a strategically important and suitable partner to exemplify the rethinking of the use of textiles in practice. The award is thus also a statement for process-oriented design that has an impact but is (unfortunately) not visible. With its efforts, the company illustrates the complexity of sustainable innovations and at the same time shows that change is possible. Furthermore, the company’s vision ties in with the legacy of the Swiss textile industry and creates innovative perspectives in this regard.
