Inklusive Mode
The Swiss Paraplegic Foundation (SPF), together with Yannick Aellen (founder and director of Mode Suisse), has launched a unique project in which designers and people with spinal cord injuries work together to create stylish and functional clothing for wheelchair users. The garments, developed in collaboration with fashion designer Lilla Wicki and students from the Swiss Textile College, will be presented as part of «Mode Suisse» 2023. This project aims to sensitise both designers and the clothing industry to the needs of people with paraplegia and to combine design and function.
Comments of the jury
Our clothes are not tailored for sitting. Most people can stand up, stretch and briefly stretch their legs when sitting becomes uncomfortable. People in wheelchairs, on the other hand, do not have this option. For these people, clothing can cause anything from uncomfortable pain to persistent discomfort and can pose a significant health risk. At the same time, for practical reasons, it is only possible to a limited extent for people in wheelchairs to express themselves carefree through fashion. What may sound like a luxury problem is an important part of social integration for people in wheelchairs. On the initiative of Ulrich Kössl, the designers Daniel Kaldis, Angelina Bergamin and Lilla Wicki have created a collection that is not only optimally adapted to the needs of people in wheelchairs in terms of functionality, but also gives them the choice of a self-determined look. The project is the only work in Edition 23 to receive a «Special Mention» from the jury: the work demonstrates high design quality and is emblematic of how design can make an important contribution to an inclusive society.
