Solar Horizon
The project creates an intelligent link between the production of solar energy in public spaces and the design of bicycle paths. It is thus an important contribution to a CO2-free future. At the core of the project are roofs fitted with solar panels over bicycle paths that are parallel to existing roads, in already built-up space. In addition to the consistent energy-specific focus, the designers also place great emphasis on design quality, which can be seen in the wooden elements or the slender shape of the concrete supports, among other things. A prototype is currently being built in western Switzerland between Montfleury and Satigny.
Comments of the jury
The project stands for the importance of new applications in solar energy and, with the roofing of bicycle routes, starts at a place where, besides additional space for renewable energy, sustainable means of transport are promoted at the same time. Some questions regarding the resource efficiency of the massive concrete support structure remain open at this stage. The jury praises the exemplary character of this project and recommends further investment in the development of the construction and the strong interweaving of design and engineering in order to find more fundamentally sustainable solutions.
