Start-up Mikafi’s pilot project rethinks smart coffee roasting from scratch. The machine enables the roasting of small batches of coffee with Mikafi’s patented technology. Numerous roasting degrees are possible and can be individually adjusted, which is central to the target group, restaurants and coffee bars. The concept also aims to create a fairer and more direct relationship between farmers and consumers, as well as a more enjoyable experience for coffee lovers. With the design, designer Sebastien El Idrissi has formulated a new typology: The design language is kept simple, timeless and functional, yet has a strong independent design moment.
Comments of the jury
The roasting machine shines with a coherent design that is reduced to the essentials. The novel typology of the roasting machine embodies the ambitious undertaking of restructuring production and delivery processes as well as power relations in the coffee industry. The rethinking of the status quo and the formulation of a corresponding design expression go hand in hand with this. The challenge of compressing the entire roasting process and applying it to the gastronomic sector is remarkable.
